Hair Treatment
People all over the world see the hair
as an important part of our body. We use our hair to express our

Human Hair

Terminal Hairs - |
They are long hairs that grow on the head and in many
people on the body, arms and legs too. They are produced by follicles
with sebaceous glands. |
A hair is a specialized outgrowth of part
of the skin called the epidermis. It has two distinct parts - the hair
follicle and the hair shaft.
A HAIR FOLLICLE is a tiny cup shaped pit buried deep in the fat of the
scalp. The follicle is the point from which the hair grows. It is well
supplied with minute blood vessels and the blood passing through them
nourishes the growing region. The temperature around the follicle is normal
body temperature and is not affected by cold or hot weather.
The HAIR BULB lies inside the hair follicle. It is a structure of actively
growing cells which eventually produce the long fine cylinder of a hair.
Special cells in the hair bulb produce the pigment that provides colour to
the hair. This pigment is called Melanin.
Hair shaft is the part of the hair that can be seen above the scalp.
Terminal hair on the head are lubricated by a Natural Oil (Sebum) produced
by the sebaceous glands of the follicles. Both in boys and girls, glands
tend to produce more oil when levels of their hormones are high. In many
teenagers, a massive surge in hormone level leads to raised grease
production. This results in the tendency to greasy hair.
Hair can support a load of about 100 grams without breaking. The Keratin
protein of the cortex is responsible for this strength.
The shape of a hair depends on several factors including the shape of the
hair follicle and its opening. They vary from person to person and also
between races.
Each individual hair is formed inside a hair bulb deep in a hair follicle.
The follicle is a tiny but powerful factory which through many people’s
lifetime hardly ever stoops working. From a baby’s birth for many
decades as much as a century in some people, the follicle continues to
produce hair. Each hair grows for many years. During this time it will be
Shampooed, Conditioned, Cut, Blown dry, Exposed to Sun, Wind and Coloured,
Bleached or Permed. None of these treatments affects the growth of the hair
in the hair bulb. Finally, the hair spontaneously falls out. The follicle
rests for a little while and then starts to produce yet another new hair.
This is the hair cycle.
Stages of Hair Cycle
Between starting to grow and falling out years later, each hair passes
through three distinct stages:-

Baldness
The most common kind of HAIR-LOSS is simple BALDNESS. Many people find this
type of baldness embarrassing and distressing but it is not a disease. For

In this condition, the hair is shed from some parts or all parts of the
scalp. Baldness affects both men and women. It is much more obvious in men.
By the age of 25, 25% of men have lost some of their hair and proportion

the shedding phase.

Dandruff
This conditions is seen as diffuse Scaliness of the scalp. In reality,
there are two distinct varieties of Dandruff :-

Dry Variety - |
The scales are fine, thin and furaceous, white or
grayish and dry or only slightly greasy. The hair is dry and lusterless.
There is mild to moderate itching. The scales falls freely on the
shoulders. This type of dandruff is more common in winter than in
summer. |

Greasy Variety - |
In this variety, both the scalp and rest of the
integument are oily. Thin malady may occur in well defined circumscribed
patches or diffusely all over the scalp. Later the condition may extend
to the flexures and other hairy regions. It may extend typically to the
eye brows, eye lids, beard, external region, axillae, groins etc. On the
scalp are present waxy greasy yellowish chick scales and crusts. Beneath
the crusts, the scalp is red or pale but dry. There may be slight
itching. Patients of this variety visually develop thinning and later
loss of hair. |
Reasons
The basic defeat is the over-production and /or change in composition of
the sebaceous secretion. Endocrine disorders, familial predisposition,
constipation and sedentary occupation further promote dandruff condition. It
is common at puberty.
